The Chinese-Dutch Ma Hui once said: “I knew how to work with ink, water and paper before I was born”. The practice of shuimo is ‘as ink flowing through my veins’.
Shuimo is the name for painting in washed ink. An East-Asian method of Chinese origin. With a paintbrush, black ink in several water dilutions is applied on washi-paper or silk.
Her love for shuimo was inherited from her father and gained strength from her personal experiences in a village for re-education in the countryside of Ningxia. Ma Hui has been living in Europe for 30 years, but her memories of China continue to inspire her. Shuimo is a bridge that connects her to her home.
